It seems Zaiger Genetics is just now beginning a great new era of interspecific hybridizing. From parent stock long in development, the peach/nectarine and cherry gene pools are joining plum and apricot (of Pluot® and Aprium® fame) to accelerate the breeding of new stone fruits.
This bareroot season marks shipments of the first plum-cherry interspecific for home growing, Sweet Treat Pluerry™, which also happens to claim a little peach and apricot in its pedigree. Sweet Treat delivers its sweetness with a zing and it hangs well on the tree.
Two years previously, the first Peach-Apricot-Plum interspecific for home growers was introduced: Bella Gold Peacotum™, a beautiful, delicious, unique fruit.
Prior to the Peacotum™ came Spice Zee NectaPlum®, the first nectarine-plum interspecific for home orchards: a taste test favorite for its meaty texture, wonderful spicy-sweet flavor and plummy aftertaste.
