Quick Screens for Low-Chill and Cold Hardy Fruit Varieties
– By Dave Wilson Nursery
To illustrate, if someone is searching for early summer stone fruits hardy to zone 6 and estimates that fruit ripens in his area about two weeks later than DWN's Hickman reference location, using the Cold Hardy Quick Screen and selecting Stone, zone 6, chilling requirement 600 hours and first harvest dates June 1 to July 1 generates a list of 20 candidate varieties. Though hardiness zones and chilling requirements are not definitive predictors of fruit variety performance, the Quick Screens can be useful for sorting and analyzing the DWN fruit tree information.
For growers who are looking for interesting varieties not specifically recommended for their area and who would like a little more flexibility in generating lists, there is a Quick Screen for Zone & Chill Testing with exposed filter operators for the chill and zone parameters.
Note that links to the Quick Screens are in the right sidebar of all Home Garden/Retail catalog pages.
