Visions of Sugar Plums in Ed's Head
Why the Plums at the Grocery
are the Way they Are

email Ed Laivo

Someone has to say it, so I guess I will...The plums that we buy in the grocery store are not fit for human consumption.

I mean, they look like they should be edible; they’re priced like they’re expected to be real good, but they taste like they could have stayed on the tree a few weeks longer.

Even then, I find that the varieties that are picked to be grown for grocery stores only look good: they really weren't supposed to be eaten.

Now please understand why someone has to say this...

Plums are by far the most satisfying and complex tasting fruit you can eat.

The gift of the plum is its many different colors, ripening times, and flavors not available in any other fruit type.

THEY'RE THE GREATEST!

The problem: most people don't know a great plum from a good plum.

I'll explain.
If all plums are picked one to two weeks before they reach full sugar and flavor, then it’s safe to say that the best plum you ever had from the grocery store was picked one week before being fully ripe, making it only a good plum at best.

Plum sales are poor and it's not the fruit's fault.

The solution?
PLANT YOUR OWN
and cut out the middle man.

Did I mention that plums are adaptable?
One of the most adaptable of all the fruit types.

Did I mention that plums are easy to grow?
They have very few problems with pests or disease.
Not even birds will bother if you keep the tree at 4 feet tall (like I keep my Santa Rosa plum),
and it’s easy to throw a net over it and get 200+ pieces of fruit (like my Santa Rosa plum).
Let me also mention that I consider Santa Rosa only a good plum, not a great plum.

Trick is, it pollinates most of the great plums, so it has its place.

Now, these are great plums and worth a try anywhere you know Japanese plums will grow

1. Beauty - An early variety. Great way to start the season.
2. Burbank - strange exotic flavor - grows anywhere.
3. Burgundy- Low chill, early red fleshed.
4. Catalina- Great plum flavor. This is what a plum should taste like.
5. Elephant Heart- The quality gauge for all other red-fleshed plums.
6. Emerald Beaut- Might be the Best Tasting Fruit of all - long harvest.
7. Laroda- Oh how sweet it is!
8. Weeping Santa Rosa- Beautiful tree, wonderful tasting fruit.

These are some of the heavyweights in the plum world.
I'm sure there are others, but I'm out of ranting time,
so just believe me: any one of these plums will make most people very satisfied...
