FUJI APPLE Recent introduction from Japan that quickly became
California's favorite apple. Sweet, very crisp and flavorful, excellent
keeper. Dull reddish-orange skin, sometimes russeted. Ripe
mid-September. Excellent pollenizer for other apple varieties. Low
chilling requirement - less than 500 hours. Self-fruitful.
GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLE (Yellow Delicious) Long-time favorite
for its sweetness and flavor. Reliable producer, adapted to many climates.
Pollenizer for Red Delicious. Mid-season harvest (September in Central
Calif.). 700 hours. Self-fruitful.
GRANNY SMITH APPLE From New Zealand. Large, late, green,
all-purpose. Crisp, tart, excellent keeper. Requires long summer.
Thrives in hot climates. 600 hours. Prolonged bloom: good pollenizer
for other apples. Self-fruitful.
GRAVENSTEIN APPLE (Green Gravenstein) Famous for sauce and
baking, also used fresh. Crisp, juicy, flavorful, tart. Early bloom, early
harvest. 700 hours. Pollen-sterile, pollenizer required: Empire, Fuji,
Gala, Red Delicious.
JONAGOLD APPLE Superb flavor - connoisseurs' choice. A cross of
Jonathan and Golden Delicious. Yellow with red-orange blush. Crisp,
juicy, subacid, all-purpose. 7-800 hours. Pollinated by Fuji, Gala,
Granny Smith or Red Delicious, but not Golden Delicious.
KING APPLE (Tompkins King) Large, old-time red-striped apple with
classic apple flavor. Its coarse, crisp flesh is subacid, sweet and distinctly
perfumed. Used for dessert, cooking and cider. Well-colored fruits are a
very attractive red with some contrasting yellow. Fairly rectangular
shape, with ribs near the base. Ripens mid-season, about with Golden
Delicious. Keeps several months, but at its best soon after harvest.
Horizontal limbs, spreading growth habit. Originated in New Jersey prior
to 1804. Estimated chilling requirement 800-1000 hours. Sterile pollen;
cross-pollination required.
SPITZENBURG (ESOPUS) APPLE Old variety, regarded by some
connoisseurs as the very best dessert apple. Red over yellow skin,
yellowish flesh. Firm, juicy, moderately sweet, renowned flavor. Good
keeper. 800 hours. Pollenizer required.
YELLOW BELLFLOWER APPLE Long-time favorite pie and sauce
apple, also excellent fresh and for making hard cider. Attractive, lemon
yellow skin. Pale, creamy yellow flesh is firm, crisp, aromatic and juicy,
with a rich flavor. For winter dessert use, the fruit may be picked while
still tart; it mellows in storage, reaching peak flavor and acid-sugar
balance after a few months. Elongated, cone-shaped, often lop-sided
fruits vary in size from small to very large. Mid-September harvest in
Central California, about with Golden Delicious and Jonagold. Vigorous,
spreading tree. Discovered in New Jersey in the mid-1700s. Low winter
chilling requirement, about 400 hours. Mid-season bloom. Pollenizer
required.
EARLI-AUTUMN APRICOT Wonderful flavor as tested by Dave
Wilson Nursery both fresh or dried. Will please even the most critical of
apricot lovers. Late harvest, first two weeks of August. Self-fruitful. Pat.

BING CHERRY Large, firm, juicy, sweet, nearly black when ripe -
superb flavor, the No. 1 cherry. Mid-season. Large vigorous tree. 700
hours. Poll. by Black Tart, Van, Rainier. Also Stella in colder climates.
BLACK TARTARIAN CHERRY Medium-sized, nearly black, sprightly
flavor, early season. Vigorous, productive tree. 700 hours. Pollenizer
required -interfruitful with all popular sweet cherries.
ROYAL ANN CHERRY Long-time favorite yellow sweet cherry for
eating fresh or canning. 700 hours. Pollenizer required - interfruitful
with Van and Black Tart, not Bing.
VAN CHERRY Very cold hardy, reliable, heavy bearing. Fine fruit
similar to Bing, though usually smaller. 700 hours. Pollenizer required -
interfruitful with all popular sweet cherries.
DOUBLE DELIGHT NECTARINE Sensational fruit - consistently the
best-flavored yellow nectarine - plus magnificent, double pink flowers.
Dark red-skinned, freestone fruit is sweet, with unusually rich flavor -
very high-scoring in taste tests. Heavy-bearing tree. Harvest early to

FROST TM PEACH Resistant to peach leaf curl (10-year trials at
Washington State U.). Delicious yellow freestone. Slight red blush over
greenish yellow to yellow skin. Heavy bearing, excellent for canning or
eating fresh. July. Showy pink bloom in spring. 700 hours. Self-fruitful.
GLEASON EARLY ELBERTA PEACH Also called Improved Elberta
or Lemon Elberta. Reliable frost hardy yellow freestone for Utah and
Pacific NW. Juicy, rich flavor. Harvest 10 days before Elberta.

HALEHAVEN PEACH From a cross of J.H. Hale and South Haven.
Medium to large size, skin red over orange-yellow. Yellow freestone
flesh is juicy, sweet, low in acid, with excellent flavor. Mid-season
harvest, about two weeks before Elberta. Dessert/can/freeze. Winter and
frost hardy. 900 hours. Self-fruitful.
REDHAVEN PEACH World's most widely planted peach. High quality
yellow freestone. Ripens early July in Central California. Frost hardy.

BARTLETT PEAR World's most popular pear. Early mid-season, high
quality, tolerates hot summers. 800 hours. Self-fruitful in most climates
of Western U.S. Elsewhere, pollinated by Bosc, D'Anjou, Winter Nelis.
COMICE PEAR The gift pack pear. Sweet, aromatic, fine texture,
superb flavor and quality - one of the best. Short neck, greenish-yellow
skin with red blush. Late harvest. 600 hours. Self-fruitful in most
climates of Western U.S. or plant with Bartlett.
20TH CENTURY ASIAN PEAR (Nijisseiki, "Apple Pear") Juicy,
sweet, mild-flavored fruit is crisp like apple. Early to mid-August in
Central Calif. Keeps well. Easy to grow, heavy bearing small tree. 450
hours. Self-fruitful or poll. by Shinseiki, Bartlett, or other.
BEAUTY PLUM Sweet, flavorful plum, more widely adapted than
Santa Rosa (more productive in cool, rainy climates). Red over yellow
skin, amber flesh streaked red. Ripens June in Central Calif. 250 hours.

SANTA ROSA PLUM Most popular plum in California & Arizona.
Juicy, tangy, flavorful. Reddish-purple skin, amber flesh tinged red. Late
June in Central Calif. 300 hours. Self-fruitful.
SATSUMA PLUM Long-time favorite plum in California. Mottled
maroon over green skin, dark red meaty flesh. Sweet, mild, not tart.
Excellent for jam. Harvest late July. 300 hours. Pollinated by Santa
Rosa or Beauty.
ITALIAN PRUNE Large, purple-skin, freestone. Rich flavor, very sweet
when fully ripe. Fresh/dried/canned. Vigorous, cold hardy tree. Late

BLIREIANA FLOWERING PLUM New growth reddish-purple,
turning greenish-bronze. Spectacular double pink flowers, fragrant.

KRAUTER VESUVIUS FLOWERING PLUM Dark purple leaves, light
pink blossoms, little or no fruit. Relatively small tree, 18' high, 12' wide.
Favorite purple-leaf plum for California. Foliage of newly planted trees
sometimes greenish til vigorous growth begins.
THUNDERCLOUD FLOWERING PLUM Abundant, light pink to white
flowers, dark purple leaves. Sometimes has small fruits suitable for
jam/jelly. Rounded shape to 20 ft. high x 20 ft. wide.
EUROPEAN WHITE BIRCH - Betula pendula Most popular deciduous
tree in the West. 30-40 ft. high, with weeping side branches and delicate,
lacy foliage. White bark. Does best with ample water and fertilizer.

JACQUEMONTI BIRCH - Betula jacquemontii Whitest bark of all
birches. Upright, narrow growth to 50'x30'. Dark green, leathery leaves.
Needs ample water, regular feeding. Sunset zones 3-11, 14-17
RIVER BIRCH - Betula nigra Resistant to bronze birch borers. Very
vigorous in early years, then grows more slowly to 50-80 ft. Bark of older
trees flakes and curls in sheets, reddish-brown to black. Glossy green
leaves are silvery underneath. All zones.
VARIEGATED BOX ELDER - Acer negundo `Variegatum' Smaller,
more desirable than the species. Sharply contrasting green and white
variegated leaves, large showy clusters of white fruit - a striking accent
tree for the landscape. Likes water, good lawn tree. Grows to 30 ft. or
more. Sunset zones 1-10, 12-24.
GOLDEN CHAIN - Laburnum vossii Small tree to 30 ft. Green bark,
clover-like bright green leaves. Yellow flowers in wisteria-like 10-20
inch-long clusters. Prefers neutral to acidic soil, not tolerant of extreme
heat. Relatively pest-free. Sunset zones 1-10, 14-17.
AUTUMN BLAZE® MAPLE - Acer freemanii New hybrid of silver
maple and red maple. Has charater and fall color similar to red maple with
adaptability comparable to silver maple. Dense oval shaped canopy.

RED SUNSET MAPLE - Acer rubrum `Red Sunset' ® Upright growth
to 40 ft., oval-shaped canopy. Glossy, dark green leaves. Bright red or

SILVER MAPLE - Acer saccharinum 40-100 ft.tall, equal spread.

RED OAK - Quercus rubra Large, slow-growing, round-topped tree to
90 ft. Deciduous. Large leaves, fall color is red to reddish-brown or
brown, sometimes orange. Needs fertile soil and ample water. Deep root

SCARLET OAK - Quercus coccinea Bright red fall color if autumn
nights are cold. Open growth habit, grows moderately fast in good soil to
60 ft. or more. Deeply cut lobed leaves. Deep-rooted: good lawn and
street tree. All Sunset zones, especially 1-11,14,15,18-20.
