ANNA APPLE Remarkable fruit for mild-winter climates in So. Calif.,
So. Ariz. Heavy crops of sweet, crisp, flavorful apples even in low desert.
Fresh/cooked. Keeps 2 mos. in refrigerator. 200 hours. Self-fruitful or
pollinated by Dorsett Golden or Einshemer.
DORSETT GOLDEN APPLE Outstanding sweet apple for warm winter
areas. Firm, very flavorful, sweet like Golden Delicious. Productive
throughout So. California and Phoenix, Arizona. Good early season
sweet apple for Central Calif. 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
GALA APPLE (Original Gala) Wonderful dessert apple from New
Zealand. Crisp, nice blend of sweetness and tartness, rich flavor. Skin
reddish-orange over yellow. Early harvest, 2-3 weeks before Red
Delicious. Good pollenizer for other varieties. Adapted to cold and
warm-winter climates. Chilling requirement apparently less than 500
hours. Self-fruitful.
BLENHEIM (ROYAL) APRICOT All-purpose freestone, sweet,
aromatic, flavorful. Long-time No. 1 apricot in California. Early bloom.
Late June harvest in Central Calif. 500 hours. Self-fruitful.
BLACK MISSION FIG The favorite. Purplish-black skin, strawberry-
colored flesh, rich flavor. Heavy bearing, long-lived, large tree. Coast or

IMPROVED BROWN TURKEY FIG Large, brown skin, pink flesh.

JULY (KIM) ELBERTA PEACH Also called Early Elberta. Reliable

BARTLETT PEAR World's most popular pear. Early mid-season, high
quality, tolerates hot summers. 800 hours. Self-fruitful in most climates
of Western U.S. Elsewhere, pollinated by Bosc, D'Anjou, Winter Nelis.
20TH CENTURY ASIAN PEAR (Nijisseiki, "Apple Pear") Juicy,
sweet, mild-flavored fruit is crisp like apple. Early to mid-August in
Central Calif. Keeps well. Easy to grow, heavy bearing small tree. 450
hours. Self-fruitful or poll. by Shinseiki, Bartlett, or other.
MERLOT GRAPE Black berry, used for distinctive red wines. Best
quality in cooler regions. 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
KRAUTER VESUVIUS FLOWERING PLUM Dark purple leaves, light
pink blossoms, little or no fruit. Relatively small tree, 18' high, 12' wide.
Favorite purple-leaf plum for California. Foliage of newly planted trees
sometimes greenish til vigorous growth begins.
ARIZONA ASH Fraxinus velutina, drought tolerant, fast growing to 40',
cold hardy to zone 6.
FAN TEXTM ASH - Fraxinus velutina `Fan TexTM' Superior selection of
Arizona ash. Large dark green leaves, symmetrical canopy, fast growing,
seedless. Good tree for southwestern desert climates. Budded onto
seedling Arizona ash.
MODESTO ASH - Fraxinus velutina glabra Beautiful deciduous shade
tree for arid climates - anthracnose fungus may be a problem elsewhere.
Vigorous, to 50 ft tall and 30 ft wide. Spectacular yellow fall color.
Sunset zones 3-24.
RAYWOOD ASH - Fraxinus oxycarpa `Raywoodi' Fast-growing,
tolerates heat, cold, alkaline soil. Compact, round-headed. Small,
delicate leaves, lacy appearance. Purplish-red fall color. No seeds.
25-35 ft.
SHUMARD RED OAK - Quercus shumardii Closely resembles Scarlet
Oak. Open growth habit, grows moderately fast in good soil to 60 ft. or
more. Deeply cut lobed leaves. Yellow and red fall colors. Tolerant of
acidic and poorly drained soils. Sunset zones 4-9, 12, 14-17.
ARIZONA SYCAMORE - Platanus wrightii medium sizedd tree 60-80
ft. With star shaped leaves having 3-5 sharply pointed lobes. Open,
spreading canopy and exfoliating, "jigsaw puzzle", bark. Native to
riparian areas of southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico.
