BLACK JACK FIG Large, purplish-brown figs with sweet, juicy,
strawberry-red flesh. Harvest August to October in Central California.
Naturally small (semi-dwarf) tree. 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
IMPROVED BROWN TURKEY FIG Large, brown skin, pink flesh.
Sweet, rich flavor, used fresh. Widely adapted - coast or inland climate.
Small tree, prune to any shape. 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
BLAKE'S PRIDE PEAR Developed by Dr. Richard Bell at the ARS
Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, WV. it has an
aromatic, rich flavor and a juicy flesh texture. It also has a high degree of
resistance to fire blight.
HARROW DELIGHT PEAR Fireblight-resistant, with fruit similar to
Bartlett. Yellow skin with attractive red blush. Smooth, fine flesh is
especially flavorful. Ripe two weeks before Bartlett. Heavy-bearing tree.
Introduced in 1982 (Ontario, Canada). 800 hours. Interfruitful with
Bartlett, Bosc, D'Anjou and Moonglow.
KIEFFER PEAR Medium to large late season fruit. Canning/cooking.
Sprightly flavor, coarse texture. Resists fireblight, tolerates hot climates.
Dependable crops. 350 hours. Self-fruitful.
POTOMAC PEAR Moonglow x Buerre D'Anjou. Ripens to a light
green. Flesh texture is moderately fine and buttery. Pleasingly subacid
flavor with mild aroma. Tree shows more resistance to blight than Seckel.
Developed by the USDA and Ohio State University.
WARREN PEAR Excellent quality dessert pear - and highly resistant
to fireblight. Medium to large, long-necked fruit with pale green skin,
sometimes blushed red. Smooth flesh (no grit cells) is juicy and buttery
with superb flavor. Good keeper. Cold hardy to -20oF. From
Mississippi. 600 hours. Self-fruitful.
CHOJURO ASIAN PEAR Russeted golden brown skin. Crisp like an
apple when ripe. Harvest mid-August in Central Calif. 450 hours.
Pollenized by Hosui, Shinko, or other pear.
HOSUI ASIAN PEAR Consistently rated the best-tasting Asian pear at
Dave Wilson Nursery fruit tastings. Large, juicy, sweet, flavorful,
refreshing, crisp like an apple. Brownish-orange russeted skin. Harvest
early to mid-August in Central Calif. 450 hours. Pollenized by Shinko,
Chojuro, Bartlett, or 20th Century.
ISHIIWASE ASIAN PEAR Large, greenish-brown, russeted skin.
Juicy, sweet, flavorful, refreshing, crisp like an apple when ripe. Early to
mid-August in Central Calif. 450 hours. Pollenized by Kikusui, 20th
Century, or other Asian pear.
KIKUSUI ASIAN PEAR Juicy, sweet, yellow-skinned fruit - crisp like
an apple when ripe. Superb fresh eating, one of the best. Easy to grow.
Keeps well. Mid-August in Central Calif. 450 hours. Partly self-fruitful
or pollinated by Ishiiwase, 20th Century, or other.
SHINKO ASIAN PEAR Late ripening - September in Central Calif. -
and excellent quality. Juicy, sweet, flavorful, refreshing, crisp like an
apple. Golden brown russeted skin. 450 hours. Pollenized by Hosui,
Chojuro, Kikusui, Bartlett.
CHOCOLATE PERSIMMON Small to medium size, oblong, bright
red skin. Sweet, spicy, firm, brown flesh, superb flavor - the choice of
connoisseurs. Astringent until ripe. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
COFFEECAKE PERSIMMON (Nishimura Wase) For Fuyu Lovers
only Pollenized by Chocolate or other persimmon, ripens one month
earlier. Unique spicy-sweet flavor that instantly evokes images of
cinnamon pastery, hot coffee and morning sunshine. If you are
considering a Fuyu, plant the pair for the perfect persimmon experience.
Non-astringent, eaten while still firm. Hardy attractive tree, practically
free of pests and disease. 200 hours. Another persimmon variety required
as a pollinizer. Gosho or Chocolate are best pollenizers.
FUYU PERSIMMON - JIRO ("Apple Persimmon") Medium size, flat
shape, still hard when ripe, non-astringent. Cool or hot climate. Hardy,
attractive tree, practically pest free. Fall harvest. 200 hours. Selffruitful.
HACHIYA PERSIMMON Large, deep orange-red, acorn-shaped. Hot
summer required to mature the fruit. Sweet, flavorful, astringent til
soft-ripe. Mature fruit can be frozen and thawed to ripen. Productive,
ornamental. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
IZU PERSIMMON Very sweet, tasty, non-astringent fruit ripens about
three weeks before Fuyu. Medium to large size, round shape. Relatively
small tree, good choice for backyard persimmon. Sometimes difficult to
start from bareroot. 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
BLUE DAMSON PLUM Very old variety, rugged and dependable.
Small, blue-black tart plums for jams & jellies. Late blooming, cold
hardy, heavy bearing. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.
BROOKS EUROPEAN PLUM Long-time favorite European plum for
Western Oregon. Oval-shaped fruit with purplish-black skin and yellow
flesh. Larger and sweeter than Italian. Used fresh and for canning and
drying. Ripens one week earlier than Italian. Discovered in Lafayette,
Oregon (seedling of Italian). Introduced in 1946. 800 hours.
Self-fruitful.
EARLY ITALIAN PRUNE (Richards) Similar to Italian, but sweeter,
slightly larger and more productive. Shorter growing season requirement
than Italian (ripens 1-2 weeks earlier). Originated near Yakima,
Washington. Introduced in 1935. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.
SENECA EUROPEAN PLUM Large reddish-purple fruit with very
sweet, crisp, yellow freestone flesh. Resists brown rot and cracking.
Used fresh and for canning and drying. Vigorous, productive, upright
tree. Successful in many climates, including Western Washington.
Originated in New York, introduced in 1972. 800 hours. Pollenizer
required: another European plum such as Brooks or Early Italian.
STANLEY PRUNE Large, dark blue skin. Juicy, sweet, delicious,
greenish-yellow meaty flesh, freestone. Late summer harvest. Late
blooming, extremely cold hardy and reliable. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.
AMBROSIA POMEGRANATE Fantastically huge fruits: up to three
times the size of Wonderful. Pale pink skin, purple sweet-tart juice,
similar to Wonderful. Long-lived, any soil. Inland or coastal climate. 150
hours. Self-fruitful

RED SILK POMEGRANATE Medium to large size fruit with a
brilliant red silky exterior, Large firm yet edible seeds have a sweet berry
flavor and a great acid/sugar balance. Naturally semi-dwarf tree has a
slightly-spreading growth habit and sets large crops. Grow as a tree or
shrub and keep any height by summer pruning. Excellent sourde
antioxidats. Eat fresh or use in cooking. 150-200 hours. Self-fruitful.
SWEET POMEGRANATE Sweeter fruit than Wonderful, more widely
adapted (better quality in cool-summer climates). Small, glossy-leafed,
ornamental tree with showy orange-red blossoms in late spring. Very
suitable to espalier and container growing. Harvest late summer. Unsplit
ripe fruit stores in cool, dry place for two months or more. Very low
chilling requirement, about 100 hours. Self-fruitful.
CARMELO WALNUT Late-leafing and blooming, adapted to colder
climate than Hartley or other popular English walnuts. Very large, well
filled nut. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. (Rootstock: NCB walnut.)
CHANDLER WALNUT Developed by U.C. Davis. Heavy bearing
(bears on lateral buds, not just terminals like Hartley). High quality
light-colored nuts. Smaller tree than Hartley, good choice for backyard
walnut. Fall harvest. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. Pat. No. 4388.
FRANQUETTE WALNUT Last English walnut to leaf out, less
susceptible to spring frost damage. Very large tree, excellent shade. Fair
production of well sealed, thin-shelled, high quality nuts. Pollenizer for

HARTLEY WALNUT Long-time no. 1 walnut in California for its
quality and dependability. Large, thin-shelled, well sealed nut.

PEDRO WALNUT Very small tree, less than 2/3 the size of other
varieties. Well-sealed nut, similar to Payne, has perhaps the finestflavored
kernel - winner of consumer taste tests. Widely adapted,

HAYWARD FEMALE KIWIFRUIT Actinidia chinensis (aka A.
deliciosa). Popular exotic fruit - fuzzy brown skin, bright green flesh,
strawberry-like flavor. Tender to frost. Hot or cool climates. 600 hours.
Pollenized by All-purpose Male.
ALL-PURPOSE MALE KIWIFRUIT Actinidia chinensis (aka A.
deliciosa). Pollenizer for Hayward female. Does not bear fruit. Very
vigorous vine. One male can pollinate up to eight Hayward females. 800
hours.
PRAIRIFIREª FLOWERING CRABAPPLE Crimson buds followed
by long-lasting, single, pinkish-red blossoms. Persistent dark red fruit.
New foliage reddish-maroon, aging to reddish-green. Highly resistant to
fireblight, scab, cedar apple rust and powdery mildew. Tree form is
upright, spreading, eventually round. 20 ft. x 20 ft.
DOUBLE WHITE FLOWERING PEACH Spectacular, large,
snow-white double blossoms. One of the showiest of all flowering trees.
Fast growth to 20 ft. x 20 ft. Prune after bloom for best results next year.
EARLY PINK FLOWERING PEACH Very early, bright pink
blossoms. Used for Chinese New Year in Southern California. Fast
growth to 20 ft. x 20 ft. Prune after bloom and again in early summer for
profuse bloom following spring.
EARLY RED FLOWERING PEACH Vivid purplish-red double
flowers, very early. Used in So. Calif. for Chinese New Year. Small,
sweet, light green-skinned fruit. Fast growth to 20 x 20 ft. Prune after
bloom for best results next year.
LATE RED FLOWERING PEACH Magnificent double red flowers.
Late bloom, good choice to follow early bloomers or for frost-prone areas.
Fast growth to 20 ft. high x 20 ft. wide.
PEPPERMINT FLOWERING PEACH Naturally-occuring, artsy
assortment of red, white, pink and variegated double flowers. Very showy
and unusual. Fast growth to 20 ft. high x 20 ft. wide.
KRAUTER VESUVIUS FLOWERING PLUM Dark purple leaves,
light pink blossoms, little or no fruit. Relatively small tree, 18' high, 12'
wide. Favorite purple-leaf plum for California. Foliage of newly planted
trees sometimes greenish til vigorous growth begins.
RAYWOOD ASH - Fraxinus oxycarpa `Raywoodi' Fast-growing,
tolerates heat, cold, alkaline soil. Compact, round-headed. Small,
delicate leaves, lacy appearance. Purplish-red fall color. No seeds.

BURGUNDY DESERT WILLOW - Chilopsis linearis ÔBurgundyÕ

Attractive, large, trumpet-shaped, fragrant, reddish-purple flowers attract
hummingbirds. Long flowering season, spring to fall. Sunset zones
11-13, 18-21.
WESTERN CATALPA - Catalpa speciosa Widely adapted - cold or hot
climates. All soils. Large, heart-shaped leaves, long seed capsules shaped
like beans. White flowers in late spring and summer. Flowers & pods
litter beneath tree. 40-60 ft. high.
GOLDEN RAIN TREE - Koelreuteria paniculata Slowly reaches 30 ft.
x 30 ft. Open habit, gives light shade. Compound leaves, yellow flower
clusters, ornamental seed pods. Tolerates heat, wind, drought, cold,
alkaline soil. Sunset zones 2-21.
PURPLE ROBE LOCUST - Robinia idahoensis `Purple Robe' Shapely
deciduous tree to 40 ft. Tolerates heat/cold/poor soil/drought. Small
leaflets, reddish new growth. Large, purplish-pink showy flowers,
prolonged bloom. Deep watering recommended. All zones.
BLOODGOOD LONDON PLANE - Platanus acerfolia `Bloodgood'
Fast-growing deciduous tree to 80 ft. Large maplelike leaves, distinctive
patchy bark pattern. Resists anthracnose, tolerates smog. Very desirable
for street, park, and lawn plantings. Sunset zones 2-24.
OCTOBER GLORY¨ MAPLE - Acer rubrum `October Glory' Nearly
round canopy, glossy green foliage. Better suited to mild winter/hot
summer climates than other red maples. Showy red fall color. Ample soil
moisture required. Reaches 40 ft. x 35 ft. Sunset zones 1-9, 14-17.
FRUITLESS MULBERRY - Morus alba `Fruitless' Fast-growing, to 40
x 50 ft., dense shade. Tolerates summer heat, alkaline soil. Drought
tolerant, but best with ample water and feeding. Not necessary to prune
back to trunk each winter. All zones.
VALLEY OAK (California White Oak) - Quercus lobata Native to
California's inland valleys and foothills. Massive trunk and limbs twist
into unique shapes. Trees reach 70 ft. or more, equal spread. Dark green,
deeply cut lobed leaves, dark gray checked bark. Prefers deep soil,
tolerates alkaline soil. Sunset zones 1-3, 6-16, 18-21.
EASTERN REDBUD - Cercis canadensis Round-headed tree to 25-35
ft. Large, bright green leaves. Spectacular display of purplish-pink
flowers in spring. Fall color in colder climates. Average water. Sunset
zones 1-3, 7-20.
CALIFORNIA SYCAMORE - Platanus racemosa Large tree to 80-100
ft. Large, light green leaves, lobed like maple. Mottled, multi-colored
trunks due to bark shedding in patches. Tolerates heat, wind, likes deep
watering in summer. Sunset zones 4-24.

BIG JOHNNY WISTERIA Wisteria floribunda (Big Johnny)
Deciduous, fast-growing, woody, long-lived vine. Bears huge clusters
(18" long) of single purple flowers in spring. Full sun, little summer
water when established.
