Contender is a proven producer of high quality, all-purpose freestone peaches for cold climates. The medium to large-sized firm fruit is sweet, juicy, aromatic and very flavorful. Mostly red skin, non-browning yellow flesh. Vigorous tree, frost tolerant late-blooming buds, moderate to good resistance to bacterial spot. Harvest about three weeks after Redhaven. Introduced by North Carolina State University in 1989. Chilling requirement 800 hours. Self-fruitful. USDA zones 4-9.
