- New for 2016 - Candy Heart, having Japanese plum and sweet cherry in its parentage, is a taste-test proven treat for fruit lovers. Its skin is dark speckled red, the amber/red flesh slightly subacid and very sweet, with a wonderfully unique flavor. This variety has an extended hang time, reaching peak ripeness around mid August in Central California.

1. The chilling requirement and planting zones for Candy Heart are not yet determined, pending reports on plantings outside central California. For a satisfactory backyard (i.e. non-commercial) crop, the estimated chilling requirement is expected to be no higher than 500-600 hours. In the test orchard at Modesto, CA, Candy Heart has consistently set heavy crops.
2. At DWN fruit tastings in 2011 and 2014, Candy Heart (tested as 32MF92) each time made scores for sweetness, flavor and overall appeal that were in the top 7% of all 1,779 fruit samples tested 1993-2014. Scores for 8-8-11 and 9-9-14, respectively: Acid 2.93, 2.73; Sugar 3.79, 3.75; Flavor 3.94, 4.07; Overall 6.99, 7.00.
